J. Brett Busby

Brett is a seventh-generation Texan, third-generation Eagle Scout, and life-long violinist who grew up in Amarillo and Austin. He was appointed to the Texas Supreme Court in 2019, confirmed unanimously by the Texas Senate, and elected to a full term in 2020.

He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and law degree from Columbia Law School, each with high honors. He then served as a law clerk to Justices Byron White (Ret.) and John Paul Stevens, U.S. Supreme Court, and Judge Gerald Tjoflat, U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. An experienced appellate litigator, Brett was a partner at the Bracewell firm in Houston, an adjunct professor at U.T. Law School, and a court of appeals judge for six years before joining the Supreme Court. Super Lawyers Magazine named him one of the top 100 lawyers in Texas in 2012, and the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists honored him as Appellate Judge of the Year in 2018.

Brett and his wife Erin, a law professor, met as law clerks at the U.S. Supreme Court. They live in Austin with their two children.
